Chess Dictionary

The first Soviet chess reference work to cover all of chess culture — from the history and organization of the game to theory and composition.

The material is split into six thematic sections, with entries arranged alphabetically inside each: history, the press, and chess in the USSR; competitions; biographies; organization; theory; composition.

The idea for the dictionary came from G. M. Geiler and A. M. Iglitsky, and the general editorship was in the hands of L. Ya. Abramov and I. Z. Romanov. The sections were edited by I. M. Linder and A. Yu. Narkevich, A. M. Konstantinopolsky and E. I. Umnov; "Composition" was written by R. M. Kofman. The authors include M. M. Botvinnik, Yu. L. Averbakh, E. I. Bykova, V. N. Panov, A. S. Suetin, L. A. Shamkovich, and M. M. Yudovich.
