Chess: An Encyclopedic Dictionary

The first chess encyclopedia published in the USSR: over 2,800 entries — history, theory, competitions and arbiting, composition, and chess in different countries.

More than 1,200 entries are about people: world champions, grandmasters and masters, chess composers, historians, and journalists.

The editor-in-chief was A. E. Karpov. The editorial board included world champions V. V. Smyslov, M. N. Tal, and N. T. Gaprindashvili, grandmasters Yu. L. Averbakh, A. S. Suetin, and N. V. Krogius, and the historian I. M. Linder.
