Knight

Abbreviated N, drawn as ♞. It moves and captures with a step all its own: one square along a file or a rank, and then, moving away from the square it started on, to the nearest square diagonally. Every knight move therefore takes it from a light square to a dark one, and from a dark square to a light one.

Unlike any other piece, the knight can pass over a square occupied by another piece (its own or the opponent's). In the starting position each side has two knights, standing on b1 and g1 (for Black, b8 and g8). In strength the knight is roughly equal to a bishop or to three pawns.
