Pawn structure

The arrangement of pawns on the board. Pawn structure has a huge influence on the whole course of the struggle and largely determines each side's plan of play. Choosing a particular pawn structure is a critical moment, since pawns move only forward and each advance weakens the rear of one's own camp to some degree (on pawn structure, see also Center).
