Tempo

In chess this word has two meanings. "Tempo" can mean the pace at which events unfold — for example, a slow or fast tempo of play.

In the narrower sense, a tempo in chess is a move: to gain a tempo is to get one move ahead of the opponent, while losing a tempo means a piece or pawn took two moves to reach a square it could have reached directly.
