Checkmate
Also known as:mate
A check against which there is no defense. Once the king is checkmated, the goal of the game is considered achieved, and the game ends in a win for the side that gave mate.
Some kinds of checkmate have names of their own:

- Smothered mate — a mate in which the king's own pieces take away its escape squares
- Epaulette mate — a mate in which the rooks, standing on either side of their own king (like a pair of epaulettes), take away its escape squares
The word "mate" comes from Arabic ("died").
