Italian fianchetto — diminutive of fianco, meaning flank, side

Flank development of the bishops via b2-b3 and Bb2, g2-g3 and Bg2 (respectively for Black, b7-b6 and Bb7, g7-g6 and Bg7). The fianchetto is widely used in modern openings.
