Evaluation

Identifying the features and the possibilities of a position. To evaluate a position correctly, you have to weigh the material balance, the relative value of the pieces and pawns, their mobility, weak and strong squares, and how the forces work together. That lets you find every tactical and strategic possibility hidden in the position, see the chances for defense and attack, and choose a plan that fits the situation in front of you.

Evaluation is made up of these elements: identifying the possibilities of the position, calculating variations, and evaluating the final position the player is aiming for. A player's ability to evaluate determines the strength of their play.
