Forcing

To compel. A forcing variation is obligatory for one side, and sometimes for both. Avoiding a forcing variation means exposing oneself to unpleasant consequences. One can force the win of a pawn, a piece, the game, a draw, perpetual check, a transition into the endgame, and so on.
