Pawn chain

1. The white pawns c3-d4-e5 are the links of a single pawn chain, and the c3 pawn is its foot, or, as it is often called, the base of the chain

A pawn chain can be mobile — one of its links can be pushed forward when the chance arises — or blocked, when it stands right up against a similar chain of the opponent. A pawn chain is most often attacked at its base, since the bottom pawn, unlike the links above it, is not defended by a pawn.
