• Evgeny Zagoriansky (1910–1961)Soviet master (1942) and engineer, better known as a chess writer. His novel about Paul Morphy was a favourite of young Soviet players.
• Vladas Mikėnas (1910–1992)Lithuanian international master and honorary grandmaster (1987), Estonian champion in 1930, and many-time Lithuanian champion (1933–1977). The Mikėnas Variation of the Modern Benoni bears his name.
