• Stefan Erdélyi (1905–1968)Romanian international master (1950) of Hungarian descent and three-time Romanian champion (1931, 1934, 1949). He played for Romania at two Olympiads.
• Hermanis Matisons (1894–1932)Latvia's strongest master of the 1920s, the first Latvian champion (1924), and that year's World Amateur Champion. At the 1931 Olympiad he beat World Champion Alekhine.
