• Stefan Erdélyi (1905–1968)Romanian master of Hungarian descent, an international master (1950) and three-time Romanian champion (1931, 1934, 1949) who played for Romania at two Chess Olympiads.
• Hermanis Matisons (1894–1932)The strongest Latvian master of the 1920s and 1930s, winner of the first Latvian championship and of the first World Amateur Championship (1924) and a noted study composer; at the 1931 Prague Olympiad he beat world champion Alekhine.
