Bishop

Abbreviated B, drawn as ♝. It moves and captures diagonally, any number of squares. In the starting position each side has two bishops — a light-squared one and a dark-squared one (i.e. moving on light and dark squares respectively), standing on c1 and f1 (for Black, c8 and f8). In strength the bishop is roughly equal to a knight or to three pawns. The name "bishop" is of Indian origin and is one of the linguistic proofs that chess originated in India.
