Evaluation

Identifying the features and the possibilities of a position. To evaluate a position correctly, you have to weigh the material balance, the relative value of the pieces and pawns, their mobility, weak and strong squares, and how the forces work together. This lets you determine every tactical and strategic possibility hidden in the position, the chances for defense and attack, and choose a plan of play that fits the situation at hand.

Evaluation is made up of these elements: identifying the possibilities of the position, calculating variations, and evaluating the final position the player is aiming for. A player's ability to evaluate determines the strength of their play.
