Open file

Also known as:open line

A file of the chessboard that is free of pawns. Control of an open file is a substantial positional advantage, often enough to win the game. Once the rooks seize an open file, it becomes a route for important piece transfers, above all for taking over the second (seventh) or first (eighth) rank and creating serious threats there.
