Pawn structure

Also known as:pawn formation

The arrangement of pawns on the board. Pawn structure shapes the whole course of the play and largely determines each side's plan. Choosing one pawn structure over another is an important decision, since pawns move only forward, and every advance weakens your own rear to some degree (on pawn structure, see also Center).
