Simplification

A device that turns a complicated position into a simpler one. Simplification of the position is achieved by trading pieces and pawns, changing the position's character so that its sharpness drops. Simplifying the position pays off when one side holds a material or positional advantage that is easier to convert in the endgame, or in a sharp position, where simplification lowers the danger of an attack.
