Compensation

Having certain gains in return for known concessions. Compensation can be material: for instance, one side gets a rook, a minor piece, and two pawns for a sacrificed queen, or a minor piece and two pawns for a rook given up. Compensation can also be positional, when in return for the material loss suffered there is an attack, an initiative, or a better disposition of forces, and so on.
