A device aimed at turning a simpler position into a complicated one. Complicating the position is worthwhile when the opponent holds an advantage and the other side wants to muddy the position to make a mistake more likely, or when play in a simple position offers no winning chances and the only way to fight for the win is to create a complex situation that resists exact calculation.
