• Hugo Süchting (1874–1916)German master of the early 1900s, winner at Hamburg 1903. He earned his master title in 1893 by winning the qualifying tournament at Kiel. The Süchting Variation of the Slav Defence bears his name.
• Carl Carls (1880–1958)German international master (1951), German champion in 1934, and an Olympiad team bronze medallist (1930). The Carls Variation of the Caro-Kann Defence bears his name.
